Bound to happen eventually
The weather cooled off nicely, making just a beauty night for baseball. Okay, maybe not cool but definitely cooler than it has been and, more than likely, than it will be. Lack of humidity was a nice touch, but it still seems to be lying low in the bushes, ready to pounce when next we meet. In any event, a good night for ball and, no trying about it, we played. First game even went a full seven innings, with little in the way of error. Although those that did occur were spectacular, the errors were few and far between and most resulted in no permanent damage. And, if we did manage to play without error, the game might devolve into something less humorous, even though we would still manage to have fun.
Took us almost to mid-July this season to reach the milestone where every team has suffered a loss, but we finally succumbed to it. Now, each and every team has been on both sides of the scoreboard, some just less than others. No worries, regular season just dictates the positioning in playoffs and, if you manage to finish off at the top, you just have to look after one of those unwieldy trophies for the off-season. However, always something to strive for because, like they say, if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. At the end, all of us will manage to make it somewhere, even though we may not get a trophy to back it up and we may not find the final destination as pleasant as others. Always sure to be in good company, though. All kidding aside, all success should be lauded, considering our advanced years and general state of mind. Thankfully, if it is not yours to laud, ridicule is also acceptable, as long as it is followed up by hearty congratulations, even if it is less than heartfelt. After all, it is still only a game played in fun and one must not take the chance of burdening others with a substantial ego to lug about. Besides, most of us might already be burdened with extra baggage, if not just a few extra pounds. Lightly on the few.
Because, after all, we’re good enough, we’re smart enough, and doggone It, people like us! Maybe lightly as well on the smart enough, but there is always more fun in a lack of intelligence and general acts of stupidity are always welcome and thoroughly enjoyed. Be a dull place if we were all perfect. Okay, little kidding aside
Few more tips. Throwing. As always if you make a throw to the base and it not only sails over the baseperson but proceeds to embed itself so far in the woods, it becomes as lost as Hansel and Gretel, you might want to hold back a little, take a little off, throw it lower. If it is stirring up dirt on impact, maybe not so low. We might also comment on distance, but I’ve always been a little short, so let’s not go there. Best to avoid self-evaluation. Takes the fun out of everything.
Also, if you want to make a quick throw to your spouse, try not to hit her anywhere but the glove. Positive all will be forgiven, but always best to avoid, best not to go there. People might talk. Unless it was just a bad catch, then never mind. Best to shoulder the blame in any event. Running. RUN! Unless you can’t, then never mind. However be open to bouts of merriment inflicted by your teammates. Calling the ball. Always a good idea. ‘Mine’ is preferable to other options such as ‘Oh no!’ or ’Oh, crap!’, but all are understood and acceptable. Do what you can. Always proceed with confidence. You know you can do it. All in all, the season continues and, as always, continues in an exemplary fashion. Keep up the good work. Sorry, good play.
