Well, that kind of sucks
Now you realize how that quick rise you get from the elation of playing ball once again can be premature, with disappointment coming a bit early, ruined by too much ejaculate falling from the sky. But enough of that. Sometimes it's best to skip the foreplay. After everyone took the time, effort and money to celebrate their maternal godsend over the weekend, the biggest mother of them all, that mistress of the environment, decided to show her gratitude and throw it all back in our face. Buckets of rain combined with improper city drainage and, perhaps, a little lack of proper preventative maintenance, managed to close the fields for the evening, circumcising our attempts to get in a second exhibition game. So, have you had enough practice? Ready to play the game for real? Play to accrue points, to try to win the regular season and secure a prime position for the playoffs? No? Well, I might have to give you some bad news. We have enough confidence in your abilities to assume you can get up to prime with only two games of practice but, this year, it appears, we have relegated everyone to one. From what I’ve seen, it may be a really long season. Good news is we’re bound to get better. Even if it is practice that makes perfect, we’re sure to achieve some sort of higher calibre of play without it, for the simple fact we have set the bar so low. Always easier to succeed to new heights when you start out in the basement. Nowhere to go but up. Well, one hopes. Hopefully there isn’t a sub-basement.
And, besides, perfection is not always what it cracked up to be and, most times, can be quite dull. No fun at all.
At least wherever you may end up, you’re bound to be in good company and never left alone. They all say that’s what misery loves but, with this kind of company, misery most likely won’t make it in the door, no matter where you end up. Bound to have fun getting there, even if you go nowhere at all. That said, next week starts the grueling regular season, when everyone tries to eke out a win, to earn some points, to be all that they can be, more or less. Even if you can’t be that, you still have to play, so you may as well do your best or, at the very least, enjoy yourself. Even if you find it hard to try, the fun is in the doing and we’ll probably be doing it a lot, no matter what it may be. Thank goodness we will be in public and fully exposed, surrounded by dozens of witnesses. Limits our actions. Keeps us honest. One hopes. Enjoy. Whatever may befall you, it’s playing a game with friends and neighbours. It doesn’t get any better than this...without being illegal...and then you have to worry about getting caught. Play ball.
