Always good to carry a spare
On a roll. Another beautiful evening of ball and we made the most of it. At least those that made it out…out to the game not out during the game, although I am sure there was a mix of both for those in attendance. Coming full on into the midst of summer and with the good weather comes the season of the sub. People taking advantage of the good weather and planning adventures off the field, leaving some teams sparse of players, clamouring for others to fill all the empty slots. So much so, we’ve activated an official sub. Captains know who he is and you may see a face on the field you might not recognize. As always, same rules apply. Seek him out, make yourself known, test the limits of his sense of humour.
No major injuries occurred (at least on the field). More subs than regulars out on the field for some teams, making for some strange bedfellows. Perhaps not strange, perhaps just members not normally on your roster. However, even if you know them and recognize them on the field, they might still be strange. But that’s another story. Mixing your team with subs is kind of a hit and miss affair, similar to our pitching stats. Like making a meal with the ingredients on hand, you might always need a little extra something to make it a meal. A little extra seasoning, a little pinch of salt, a handful of pepper. Just keep adding ingredients until you create a semblance of a meal. At the end, even though it may be edible, it sometimes might be a little off. In any event, you keep mixing ingredients until you find something that tastes like it should. But, by that time, the game is usually over and you have to move on and work with a whole new set of ingredients. Best to throw it all in the pot, stir it all up and hope for the best.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Still the game gets played and some players get to enjoy extra time on the field. Like to say its a win-win, but it’s baseball, so no matter the positive outlook, it will most likely be a win-lose. At least for those keeping score. So the teams become mixed, interbreeding with other teams to allow the games to be played and it seems to be working out overall, as no one has yet to forfeit. Nice of us to be willing to play with people we normally compete against, but i guess we’re having so much fun out there, we’ll put up with just about anything to keep playing. Even if, sometimes, our bodies disagree. Besides the medley of players, the games played out as they should, a win here, a loss there, a few points for one team and nought for the other. The schedule plays out, the
standings get updated and the lengthy regular season continues on, its simple task to figure out who plays who in the first game of the playoffs. Might be a long, gruelling affair if not for the fact it continues to be so much fun. Okay, on occasion, it can also still feel like its long and gruelling, but you can never get too much of a good thing. Just grin and bear it. And there is always something out there that will bring a grin to your face, if not an outright smile. Even if, at times, you have to look for it. Always something to bear in mind.
