Another beauty night on the field
It was a perfect night for baseball. No rain, nary a cloud in the sky and hot, damn hot. Unusual for this season. Unusual, yet not unique. Hopefully, the beginning of a continuing trend. Confident the weather gods have finally turned their favour our way and it won’t be long before people start complaining about the heat. The dry heat. Nothing good really comes up from it, just going through the motions, so you are best just to deal with the occasional dry heats. Always remember, it could be worse. Better than rain, cold and always an improvement over snow.
Players previously used to playing in damp weather seemed to have issue acclimating themselves to this new phenomena of perfectly good weather and some stellar playing habits were replaced by a number of unexpected errors (mixed in with all the expected ones). No worries though, as games were completed without injury and with everyone in good spirits. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves out on the field, some of them even taking some time to pay attention to the game. On occasion. Seen it all before. Sometimes it is a welcome break to have your attention stray elsewhere. Dangerous, yes, but a welcome break. As stated, games completed without injury, so it all worked out for the best. Usual events took place, Two games, four teams, two won, two lost. That’s it. Intermixed with some fun crap, which is the nature of our games, win or lose. Even though you think it seems like multiple times, you can only really lose once per night and, how can you really lose, when it’s all about the people you hang out with, the people who take time out of their busy day to help you enjoy a losing situation, to sometimes rub it in your face, to occasionally kick you when you’re down. All with the best intentions. They are not to be frowned upon for keeping you from success, but congratulated for helping you learn that it’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game. Or enjoy it, in any event.
On the bright side, we really have to win only two games in a row at the end of the season, so the rest is all just icing on the cake. Back to business. Rule change. Infielders standing out on the grass for female hitters. The powers that be have succumbed to the popular vote and modified the rule. Infielders just have to stand behind the baseline when women come to the plate. Still, wish maybe it was for weak hitters, so maybe I could apply for it. That and perhaps having the infielders leave the field entirely. That would help my game immensely. Plus, if they would stop trying to make me catch things. And throw stuff. Never works out as well as I hope. Thank goodness I can always amuse myself, so all that baseball stuff is secondary. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Guess we all just to keep at it and hope for the best while enjoying the worst. Just to make sure we get the most out of our enjoyment, the powers that be have applied for and received permission for an extra game to be played at Country Lane, before the playoffs, to accommodate a little for the games already lost to rain. Revised schedule will be posted eventually, for sure before the game needs to be played. Okay, done, updated.
We also lost a player but we also gained one. As with all others, seek them out, find them and make yourselves known to them. At the very least try to assimilate them into the types of abuse they may have to endure for the amusement of the league.
Not to worry, most injuries, be it mental or physical, are usually self-inflicted and not from any abuse you may have to suffer at the hands of your teammates. For the amusement of others. As always, what doesn’t kill you, makes other people laugh. Or makes you stronger. One of those two. Unsure which. Both work.
