Into everyone's life a little rain must fall
Weather was threatening all about, but was kind enough to give us a brief respite. A half-hearted sort of kindness, a kindness that only lasted through the first game and into the photo shoot (team pictures). Even stretched it one inning into the second game before we had to issue a cease and desist order. I know. Hard to believe. Rain. Who would have thought after the stable spring weather we have been experiencing that rain would become the bane of our existence.
Guess old people can’t afford to get wet. Not that I spied anyone melting, but the dampness tends to seep into the bones, so better safe than sorry. We sport such a diverse set of bones, it’s better we err on the side of caution. Field was messy and getting a wee bit slippery and we tend to fall down on a perfectly good, dry field. Best not to push our luck. We have some pretty bones out on the field at any given time. Best to keep them intact, when possible. Don’t want to have to cover them up in casts, splints or even just elastic bandages. Detracts from the view. Bad news was some of us couldn’t get our fix of ball for the week. Shame, even if some of us may cringe when we hear ball and fix in the same sentence. Ask any household pet. First game was dry with nothing pelting down from the skies above, but still needed to get the full grounds crew out with a vast array of equipment, to drain the field, specifically around home plate, removing the pond that was there and replacing it with a firm layer of quicksand. Good work by all. Could never have got it all done without all the foremen on the field. City field. Guess we had to emulate a city work crew. Not entirely, as the job got done with little delay to the game.
First game played out as expected, with balls hit to the infield responding slower than expected, slowing as they hit the damp, soggy field and falling short of most infielders. Balls hit high to the outfield were subject to swirling gusts of wind, making their trajectory suspect and misinterpreted by even the most professional of outfielders (yeah, like we have a lot of those). Even with impending inclement conditions and the moistness on the field, the first game was completed, with one team called the winner, the other not. Second game, as stated, lasted one inning and then had to be called, resulting in a tie. Even though the players had to prematurely leave the field, dejected they could not full exhibit their athletic prowess, they could lead happy, taking solace in the fact they each left with an extra point, neither shooting a blank. Neither gets a full two points awarded with a win, but beggars can’t be choosers, especially wet ones.
As mentioned, team photos took place. Unfortunately, we seemed to be missing several members of most teams. Do have some photoshop skills, so can crop in some missing members (players), but difficult when a quarter of the league is not about. As usual, we may have to take some individual photos and crop them in, but may need to try and reschedule some team shots. Because, knowing me and that my photoshop skills tend to lean towards the bizarre and embarrassing, falling just sort of humiliating, it might be best avoided. Decision to be made at a higher pay grade than mine. Talk amongst yourselves. All in all, half a night tends to produce half a blog. Okay, I tend to go on, so maybe more than half. Always find it hard to cut myself off in mid-sent…
