To err is human, to amuse sublime
As the regular season slowly comes to a close, I find myself short of words, not much to say, drawing a blank.
Yeah, right. Even sticking to the basics, I should be able to drone on, even if just for a little bit.
As September begins, the full brunt of summer has returned, drenching the field in a sweltering pallor that only us, as die-hard ballers, are willing to face and overcome. What’s a little perspiration amongst friends? We can all be thankful Mother Nature continues to smile upon our aged souls and give us respectable environmental conditions, even as others have begun to clear cut the forest behind our diamond.
With one week left in the regular standings, it remains a dead heat, at least for the majority. Thanks to the last place team willing to give up so many points, even if begrudgingly, the top three teams are all within one or two points of each other. However, the last games of the regular season may be for nought, simply a preview of the first round of the playoffs, with the first place team playing the last place team and the middle two teams playing each other. If you’re a betting person, odds would be in favour of little change to final standings but, hell, you never know. Shit happens. If you do want to bet, just don’t bet the farm.
Even after weeks and weeks of playing, errors still persist, thankfully with little or no injury to those on the field. Bruised egos aside, that is what little ego we have or care about, we all seem able to bask in our own humility and take our mistakes on the chin…or the knees…or the arm…or some other part of our body. We all seem perfectly complacent to laugh it off as others laugh at us. As long as someone is having fun, we all seem to be able to immerse ourselves deep in it as well. At least on the diamond. Hopefully the mistakes of your ways do not carry themselves home with you but, if they do, thankfully someone was empathetic enough to create alcohol.
As the season winds down, emails and post of thanks start to permeate the airwaves. Won’t mention any names, but we should never forget to include those who are responsible for the communications themselves, Sue. Oops, slipped.
And never forget to thank yourselves and your teammates, even if it is just for showing up. Sometimes just coming out is the bravest thing one can do but, if it wasn’t for everyone being there, it just wouldn’t be the same. Thanks for your sacrifice, commitment and, on the odd occasion, your amusing errors and mistakes. Not odd as in rare, odd as in, well, just odd.
Again, when you do screw up, because you know you will, try not to take it home with you. Unless you want to do it just to perpetuate a continual laugh. Never beat yourself up over it. They will always be plenty of volunteers to do that for you. So you have no real option other than to laugh it off. Everyone else will definitely get a chuckle from it.
If you can’t beat them, amuse them. In your continuing efforts to succeed, we always appreciate you taking the time to give us a little hilarity. Sometimes even an outright belly laugh.
Guess I have lots of words left…literally.
